The AEW World Champion turned up unannounced in Uonuma two days before he defends the NEVER six-man titles at Ryogoku.

Will Ospreay walked into an NJPW show unannounced on Saturday, October 10, 2026, and attacked the Unbound Co. group, finishing with a Hidden Blade on his former United Empire partner Jeff Cobb. The reigning AEW World Champion appeared at Road to King of Pro-Wrestling at Horinouchi Gymnasium in Uonuma, Niigata. The show was not televised or streamed on NJPW World, so only the crowd in the building saw it live.

What happened in Uonuma

The main event was an eight-man tag in which Yuto-Ice, OSKAR, Jeff Cobb and Gedo beat United Empire's HENARE, Great-O-Khan, Callum Newman and Zane Jay. Both teams were still at ringside when Ospreay's music hit. He dropped Yuto-Ice with a handspring overhead kick and OSKAR with Pip Pip Cheerio, then put Cobb down with the Hidden Blade.

He then took a microphone. "The best wrestler in the world has returned to the blue ring," he told the crowd. "I'll see you at Ryogoku. And I'm going to bring all the belts back to the Empire." NJPW posted the clip soon after and said the venue was in an uproar.

The title match at King of Pro-Wrestling

Ospreay, HENARE and Great-O-Khan hold the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship, which they won at Wrestling Dontaku in May 2026. That was also Ospreay's last NJPW match before Saturday. Their first defense is against Cobb, Yuto-Ice and OSKAR at King of Pro-Wrestling on Monday, October 12, at Ryogoku Sumo Hall in Tokyo. The show streams on NJPW World from 3am ET (07:00 UTC), with English commentary.

"All the belts" has a second target. On Tuesday, Yuto-Ice and OSKAR, the Knockout Brothers, took the IWGP Tag Team Championship back from HENARE and Great-O-Khan, and named Cobb as their partner for Ryogoku afterward.

The rest of the card is headed by Yota Tsuji defending the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Ryohei Oiwa. Gabe Kidd puts the IWGP Global Heavyweight title on the line against Shota Umino, and AEW's Konosuke Takeshita teams with Toru Yano.

Why Jeff Cobb is on the other side

Cobb spent years in United Empire with Ospreay before signing with WWE, where he wrestled as JC Mateo in Solo Sikoa's group. WWE released him in spring 2026. He came back to NJPW at the G1 Climax 36 final on August 16, attacked Callum Newman and joined Unbound Co., the group run by Gedo.

Ospreay's AEW status

The trip to Japan does not change anything in AEW. Ospreay is the AEW World Champion after beating Kenny Omega at All In at Wembley Stadium on August 30, his first world title. He kept it against Jon Moxley at All Out in Chicago in September. NJPW and AEW have worked together for years, and nothing has been announced about the AEW title being defended in Japan.
