Joseph Sawyer, the former WWE star Joe Gacy, hurt his knee during a GCW World Championship defense at the promotion's show The Score in Cincinnati on Saturday, September 26, 2026. He limped out of the ring, did not finish the match and left the 20th Century Theater without his title belt. A day later he said the injury did not look like one that would keep him out for long.

What happened at GCW The Score

Sawyer was booked for two title defenses on the card, one against Jazzy Yang and one in an open challenge. During the second of those matches he took a cannonball in the corner, and his knee absorbed most of the impact. He rolled out of the ring right away, was checked by the referee and could be seen limping.

Before leaving he picked up a microphone and reportedly told the crowd he might be out for months. Then he headed to the back and left the building. Reports from the show differ on which of his two opponents threw the cannonball, and GCW had not released a full account of the match at the time of writing.

Injury status and what Sawyer said

Sawyer addressed the injury on social media after the show:

Yes I did get hurt. No I didn't finish the match. I tried to get the feeling back in my knee to see if I could and sadly I couldn't. Luckily it seems like it isn't anything that will put me out for an extended about of time. So yes I think I'll be okay for now.

The next morning he followed up with a short message saying he was "actually walking better already this morning" and thanking the people who had reached out. No diagnosis has been made public, and neither Sawyer nor GCW has said whether he had the knee scanned.

The status of the GCW World Championship after the unfinished match has not been confirmed either. No title change has been announced, so Sawyer remains GCW World Champion for now.

His GCW World Championship reign

Sawyer won the GCW World Championship in August at GCW Homecoming Weekend in Atlantic City, New Jersey, beating Atticus Cogar with Sister Abigail. Cogar had held the title for 266 days. The finish involved Max Recon of Cogar's VNDL group running in, before former WWE referee Drake Wuertz appeared and stopped Recon from counting the pin.

It was his second singles title on the independent scene in a matter of days. On August 8 he had beaten Anthony Gangone for the Xcite Wrestling Heavyweight Championship, his first championship after WWE.

TNA debut and the Bound for Glory match with The Hardys

The injury came two days after Sawyer's TNA debut. On the September 24 episode of TNA Impact, the masked men who had been attacking TNA wrestlers backstage were unmasked as Sawyer and Samuel Shaw, who wrestled in WWE as Dexter Lumis. The pair had left Matt and Jeff Hardy laid out, and the screen introduced them under the team name Syx.

Both men were part of The Wyatt Sicks in WWE, where they won the WWE Tag Team Championship together in July 2025. WWE released them in April 2026 along with Bo Dallas, Erick Rowan and Nikki Cross. Shaw had wrestled for TNA before. For Sawyer, who spent close to six years in WWE, it is a new company.

Sawyer and Shaw were back in the ring on the October 1 edition of Impact to explain the attacks, with Shaw naming The Hardys as their main target. TNA then made the match official: The Hardys against Syx in a Falls Count Anywhere match at Bound for Glory on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida. Nothing said on that broadcast referred to Sawyer's knee.

TNA has not commented on his knee, and the match was still advertised as of October 8.

Who is Joseph Sawyer?

Sawyer's real name is Joseph Ruby, and he was born on August 8, 1987, in Franklinville, New Jersey. In NXT he played a politically correct spokesman and later a cult leader, heading the group Schism with The Dyad and Ava Raine. He moved to the main roster with The Wyatt Sicks in June 2024, wearing a pig mask, and stayed with the group until his release.
