El Hijo del Vikingo Has Second Surgery on Injured Left Knee
The AAA star had another operation on October 6, three months after ACL surgery, and no new return date has been given.
El Hijo del Vikingo has had a second operation on his left knee. The AAA star told fans on Instagram that "tomorrow Mr HDLV will undergo another knee surgery", and on Tuesday, October 6 he posted photos from his hospital bed saying the procedure had been a success.
What we know about the second operation
Vikingo did not say why a second procedure was needed, and nobody has given a new date for his return. His post-surgery message, written in Spanish, thanked fans for their support and said the operation went well.
The setback follows a more upbeat update in September, when he said on WWE Ahora that it was going well, while adding that his doctors had told him not to rush back.
The ACL tear that started it
The original injury happened at the end of June, when Vikingo tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while preparing for an NXT match against EK Prosper. The match was called off. He had surgery on July 7, and at the time he was reported to be facing roughly nine months out of the ring. A second operation would normally push that back, though no revised estimate has been given.
His most recent match aired on the July 3 episode of SmackDown, taped a few days before the injury, when he challenged Rey Fenix for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship and lost.
The injury also cost him a title. Vikingo had won the AAA Latin American Championship from El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. on May 30 at Noche de los Grandes, with help from Omos. On July 11, during Lucha Libre AAA on Fox, Rey Mysterio declared the championship vacant.
A run of knee problems since 2024
This is the second knee to need surgery in under three years. In early 2024 he tore the meniscus in his right knee, which forced him to give up the AAA Mega Championship on March 17, 2024. He had held it since December 4, 2021, a reign of 833 days. After coming back he picked up another injury at a TNA taping later in 2024 and a further one in a PROGRESS match roughly two months after that. He was reported to have stayed healthy through 2025.
Titles and where he stands in AAA
Vikingo, 29, was born in Puebla and has wrestled since 2012. His main singles honors in AAA are listed below.
| Championship | Won | Ended | How it ended |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAA Mega Championship | December 4, 2021 | March 17, 2024 | Vacated through injury after 833 days |
| AAA Mega Championship | May 31, 2025, beat Alberto El Patrón at Alianzas | September 12, 2025 | Lost to Dominik Mysterio at Worlds Collide: Las Vegas after 104 days |
| AAA Latin American Championship | May 30, 2026, beat El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. | July 11, 2026 | Vacated through injury |
He also held the AAA World Trios Championship twice between 2018 and 2021. On March 14, 2026 at Rey de Reyes he tried and failed to win the Mega Championship back from Dominik Mysterio.
Since WWE bought AAA in 2025 he has been one of the company's leading names and was starting to appear on WWE television before the injury. American fans may also remember his run on AEW programming in 2023, which started with a main event loss to Kenny Omega on the March 22 edition of Dynamite. He was never formally signed to AEW.
For now there is no return date. Given the original nine-month estimate from July and a second operation in October, a comeback before spring 2027 looks unlikely, although neither Vikingo nor WWE has said how long he will be out.
